Statement from Dr. Michael Morris

On Tuesday, October 10, 2017 Dr. Morris was named Superintendent of Schools. Here is a statement he released after this appointment:

"It has been a privilege to have spent my educational career in our districts working on behalf of the children of Amherst, Leverett, Pelham and Shutesbury, and I am honored that I have been allowed to continue that work as the Superintendent of Schools. I want to thank the members of the School Committee for developing an open and thoughtful process in making this decision and for affording me this opportunity. The support of the School Committees, the outstanding Amherst Regional Public Schools faculty and staff, and the broader community has been invaluable during my time as Interim Superintendent. I look forward to continuing to build on those strong working relationships as we move forward with our vital work to support our communities’ most valuable resource—our children. Thank you again to the School Committee for showing your confidence in me in the vote for my appointment as well as over the past 13 months; I am excited for the journey ahead that we will travel, together, for the betterment of our students, families, staff, and community."

Superintendent Search

Our school district is now in the process of searching for a new Superintendent of Schools to begin work in July 2011. Hazard, Young, Attea and Associates has been hired to assist the School Committees in this search process. Consultants Al Argenziano and John Connolly of HYA will begin their work by helping the community define the qualities, skills and experience that the public is looking for in a Superintendent. The work to develop this leadership profile will occur on October 27 and October 28, during which time a variety of meetings will occur with school, parent, and community groups. In addition, public forums will be held on Wednesday, October 27 at 2:00 pm in the Wildwood School library and at 7:00 pm in the ARHS Auditorium. The list of groups scheduled to meet with the consultants will be announced in the next few days.

In addition to holding public forums, we are now posting an online survey to seek your input in the process of hiring a new superintendent. This survey is designed to gather your perception on the importance of various characteristics commonly found in effective superintendents. The information will be used by the School Committees to determine the "Desired Characteristics" of our next superintendent. Select the survey link below that best represents your relationship to the School District.

Please continue to check this site for updates as the search process occurs. We deeply appreciate your participation in this important endeavor.

Superintendent Vote on Monday, March 2 at 7:30pm, ARHS Library

The Regional School Committee is going to meet this coming Monday, March 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the High School library to vote on its top pick for School Superintendent. By law, their deliberations must be made in public. All nine members of the Regional School Committee, which includes five Amherst School Committee members, will be voting. Many Fort River parents made a special effort to attend the public sessions with the three superintendent finalist candidates. It's important for Fort River parents to be heard, so please consider contacting the members of the School Committee with your personal impressions about the candidates and your recommendations for how you would like to see them vote. You can email the school committee as a whole by sending an email to the following address: schoolcommittee@arps.org. You can also find contact information for the individual committee members at this link: http://www.arps.org/contact-us/. It's important that you contact the members of the school committee, even if you filled out the forms at the various public sessions. Also, please plan on attending the meeting on Monday evening. If you would like to refresh your memories about the candidates, you can see their resumes on the ARPS.org website. You can watch the evening sessions with each of the candidates online at the ACTV website. Also, please note that there will be an Amherst School Committee meeting the following evening, Tuesday March 3rd, at 7p.m. in the ARHS cafeteria.
