John Keins’ 4th grade class has started a fundraiser for St. Jude's Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee for pediatric cancer research. St. Jude is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatment not covered by insurance. No child is ever denied treatment because of the family’s inability to pay.
The class has posters displayed around the school and presented 2 short skits at a recent assembly along with a PowerPoint presentation about the project. A second presentation and skit will be done in an upcoming assembly which will include donation results to-date.
Currently, the donation total is at about $250.00 . The class goal is to reach at least $500.00. There are 6 donation boxes for students and families located at various places in the school (lobby, library, school office, teacher’s lounge, and cafeteria). Through participation in this service-learning project, the students will have opportunities to work toward a common good and goal as they develop a growing sense of social responsibility, personal pride, and develop the students' civic skills and attitudes. According to Mr. Keins, “the children are motivated because it provides a direct opportunity to help other children less fortunate than they.”
Please consider making a donation! For more information about St. Jude, please visit: http://www.stjude.org/ or contact Mr. Keins.
