Chili Cook Off - Update and Thanks!

Thank you to everyone who made the first Fort River Chili Cook Off a huge success. And Congratulations to Suzanne Schilling who won the Golden Ladle and First Prize! All the chili's were DELICIOUS and our UMass athlete judging panel had a hard time choosing! Thank you to ALL the participants in the cook-off and all the folks who made the accompanying corn bread. Special thanks to Chris Felton and Amy Hampson for the extra help!

¡Gracias a todos los que hicieron los primeros  Chili Cook Off de Fort River esto fue un gran éxito. Y enhorabuena a SuzanneSchilling quien ganó el Cucharón de Oro y Primer Premio! Todos los chile eran DELICIOSOS y nuestro atleta de UMass panel de jueces tuvo un tiempo difícil para  elegir! ¡Gracias a TODOS los participantes en el Cook-off y todas las personas que hicieron el pan de maíz que lo acompaña. Un agradecimiento especial a Chris Felton y Amy Hampson por la ayuda extra!

Book Fair Thank Yous

Once again the Scholastic Book Fair was a huge success!  This is an event that takes an enormous amount of volunteers to pull it off.  First of all, a big thank you to the staff of Fort River, including Fran Lundington & all library staff for being so patient with us. And to the custodians for set up, clean up and always getting what we needed. 
Thank you to all the wonderful parents who came by and were willing to give a hand and stay longer than they had expected.  You may have thought you didn’t do much, but you were so helpful.  This includes: Angela Russo-Long, Munju Soh, Teri Larkin, Asha Kinney, Becky Schneider, Jumee Lee, Iris Berkman, Sue Borden, Suzanne Schilling, Deep Chinappa, Rebecca Kennedy, Ali Wicks-Lim, Mary Beth Meade, Amy Sweeting, Tim Hope, Mark Dooley, Nancy Stewart, Bridget Hynes, Emily Coleman, Meghan Keane, Inkyoung Kim, Shari Abbott, Kathleen Traphagen, Doug Slaughter,& Kristen Lynch.  
Special thanks to Michele Spirko, Liz Larson & Erin Cherwatti for so many hours of hard work & giving so many great ideas. 
Because of you volunteering, all our kids received books and our library will be able to buy new books and bookcases.  I apologize if I have missed anyone.  Everyone was so helpful and supportive for this event and it is much appreciated.

Feria del Libro  Gracias a ti

Una vez más la Feria del Libro Scholastic fue un gran éxito! Este es un evento que tiene una enorme cantidad de voluntarios parallevarlo a cabo. En primer lugar, un gran agradecimiento al personal de Fort River, incluyendo Fran Lundington y todo el personal dela biblioteca por ser tan paciente con nosotros. Y a los custodios por instalar, limpiar y siempre conseguir lo que necesitábamos.

Book Fair Volunteers Needed!

Please sign up in the link below for shifts during daytime classroom visits. Tasks are varied and include assisting shoppers, stocking and arranging merchandise, and reading to kids! Some shifts are short so feel free to sign up for more than one! Volunteers are also needed to set-up and breakdown the fair and for other promotional and decorating tasks. Thanks for your generous help!!

If you are unavailable during daytime hours, please consider volunteering during our terrific evening community event, Fort River Reads! Details on that event will be posted on the blog at a later date.

Fort River Reads and Chili Cook-Off


The Fort River PGO invites all families to a
Chili Cook-Off  
On Wednesday, December 5 from 6-8pm
the Fort River PGO will host its annual
  Fort River Reads Book Event  & Chili Supper   
Come check out the Scholastic Book Fair with your family and enjoy a community chili supper with a competitive edge!
We need chili makin’ community members to make their favorite recipe and be part of our chili cook-off. Here’s how you participate:
• Sign up and make a pot of your best chili. Sign up info below.
• Bring your chili in a crock-pot for folks to enjoy and tasters to taste.
   Don’t have a crock-pot? No problem, we will have many and can transfer   from your pot to keep warm.
• Our “celebrity” tasters will declare a winner and award the grand prize.
• We also need folks to bring cornbread. See sign up below.
• Or just bring the family and enjoy some chili ($1/bowl) and a few new books!

• Traiga su chile en un crock-pote para que la gente disfrutey catadores al gusto.
¿No tienes un crock-pot? No hay problema, vamos a tenermuchos y pueden transferir desde el bote para mantener el calor.
• Nuestros "celebridades" catadores declarará un ganador yel premio del gran premio.
• También necesitamos gente para traer pan de maíz. Verfirmar a continuación.

Coffee with a Principal and PGO Meeting

Following our monthly Coffee with a Principal, the PGO will hold a general voting meeting. At this meeting, we will go over the budget for the year and look at upcoming events and ongoing committee needs and activities. The coffee and meeting will be held in the cafeteria and younger siblings are welcome to attend.

Learn to Play Lacrosse


Calling all girls! 
Learn to play Lacrosse!
Amherst Youth Lacrosse is looking to create Girls’ Lacrosse teams for grades 3-4 and 5-6 for Spring 2013.  The teams will hold regular practices and compete against teams in Western Massachusetts.  Games will be played from April 21st to June 9th. 
Even though spring seems like a long ways away, it is important that players sign-up ASAP.  In addition, adult assistance with coaching and fundraising is needed.

Multi-Arts Raffle

Multi-Arts is excited to participate in Valley Gives, a fundraiser organized by the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts to help non-profit organizations in the Pioneer Valley. As part of this event, Multi-Arts is raffling 6 places at one of our camps that can be enjoy by your child, or any other child you may want to sponsor. When you donate $10 or more to Multi-Arts through Valley Gives on December 12, you will enter automatically to all our raffles and win one day, one week, or two-weeks session for your child to immerse in the arts through theater, music, art, dance, fashion design and more.

When we reach 100 and 200  donors we will raffle one day-camp to participate in any of our winter, spring or summer programs in 2013. 300 donors we will raffle one week-camp during one of our one-week camp programs 500, 700 and 1000 donors, we will raffle one 2-week session of our summer camp per mark

Cookie Dough has Arrived!


The Fort River community loves cookies!
THANKS to all families who eagerly participated in our EXTREMELY successful cookie dough fundraiser! 
We raised over $2700 for our classrooms - amazing! 

The cookie dough will be distributed in the main lobby
on Wednesday, November 14
during the following times:
1:15 - 2:15pm AND 4:30 - 5:30pm


Perishable cookie dough will NOT be sent home in students' backpacks. 
Volunteers are needed to help with distribution. Student helpers are welcome!

Hurricane Sandy Bake Sale - Update!


Thanks to the amazing organizing of Fort River parent Stephanie Jones, the Election Day Bake Sale raised $750 for the American Red Cross - Hurricane Sandy Relief.  Stephanie pulled the bake sale together in less than 24 hours and thanks to the generosity of Fort River families who brought in items for sale and the voters of Precinct 6, our community is able to reach out to those in need in the New York/New Jersey area.

Gracias a la increíble organización de  los padres de Jones Stephanie de Fort River , el día de las elecciones la venta de horneados recaudó $ 750 para la Cruz Roja Americana - Alivio del Hurancan Sandy. Stephanie vendio todos los pasteles juntos en menos de 24 horas y gracias a la generosidad de las familias de Fort River que trajeron artículos a la venta y los votantesdel Distrito 6, nuestra comunidad es capaz de llegar a las personas necesitadas en las zonas de   Nueva York / Nueva Jersey.

Events (Track):  Long Jump, Shot Put, 100 meters, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1600m 4 X 100m, 4 X 400m 
                                           AND 
                                           Wednesday, November 28 (Cross Country)
                                           3:30 (K-2) 1 kilometer; 3:50 (3-4) 1.5 K; 4:10 (5-6) 2K

Schools Invited:  Leverett, Pelham, Shutesbury, Crocker Farm, Fort River, Mark’s Meadow, Wildwood, Common School, Amherst Montessori, Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion
Divisions for both meets:  Grades K-2, 3-4, 5-6; separate girls and boys divisions
Suggested Donation:  $3 per runner.
