News from the PGO

On behalf of the officers of the Parent Guardian Organization (PGO), welcome to the new school year.  Every Fort River family is automatically a member of the PGO and we hope that everyone has the opportunity to participate in supporting the school through involvement in PGO activities.

One of the best ways to stay informed about PGO activities as well as community events is to sign up for email updates from the PGO.  You can do so by sending a request to Jenn Green at jenn.fortriver@gmail.com.  We also invite you to visit our website (http://ftriver.blogspot.com) or follow us on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/FortRiverPgo).

There are many ways to support the PGO - attend a coffee, clip BoxTops, be a room parent  - but the most important thing is to be involved.  We are a volunteer organization and rely on our Fort River community to achieve our PGO mission of enriching and supporting the work of our teachers and administrators.

Below is a list of various events and committees that the PGO organizes.  All committees are always open to new volunteers.  Have an idea for an event or committee you would like to see started?  By all means, let us know.  We are always looking for new ways to grow and expand our support of the school and the kids.

This year our monthly Coffee with a Principal will be held on the second Friday of the month.  We made this change to avoid an on-going conflict with the ARMS monthly coffee.  Our first coffee will be Friday, September 13th, 8:45-9:30.  We hope can join us in the cafeteria.

FORT RIVER IS GOING GREEN(ER)!

Did you know that last year the Amherst elementary schools produced 70 tons of trash?! That is 156,800 pounds.  Of that, an estimated 40,000 pounds was compostable. This year Fort River continuing to actively compost and recycle our lunch waste from the first day of school.

To make this program a success, we need your help. For the first few weeks of the school year, we need volunteer compost coaches each day to help the kids separate their trash during the lunch hours. The “Compost Coach’s” job is simple (essentially a waste separation cheerleader) and takes only two hours per shift.  As the kids become more familiar and comfortable with the system, they will be able to manage on their own.

Thanks to a number of parents who have already stepped up, there are only a few spots left that need to be filled.  If you can help for one of these shifts, www.SignUpGenius.com/go/9040D4EAFA922AB9-school.
If you have questions, please contact the town Recycling Coordinator, Susan Waite, waites@amherstma.gov.

SignUpGenius.com/go/9040D4EAFA922AB9-school.
