School Reorganization News

As most of you already know, serious budget issues are prompting the school superintendents and the school board to study the feasibility of reorganizing the town's schools. Last year a committee made up of educators and parents worked at examining possible reorganization options for the elementary schools. The Executive Summary of the report is on the ARPS.org website here.
The Superintendents will be holding further meeting(s) after the school vacation to examine the feasibility of moving forward with some form of reorganization and if you would like to be a part of it or have any ideas, or questions and concerns, please email them directly to Helen Vivian at vivianh@arps.org. School Committee Member Catherine Sanderson, who was also on the school reorganization committee and is a Fort River parent, has posted a press release from School Co-Superintendent Helen Vivian on her blog here. (This also went out in the backpacks.) Catherine has also posted an entry on some of her own thoughts about the restructuring directly beneath the press release.
Although I am not planning on making any formal updates to the Parent Council website over the break, I will try to post any breaking news on this topic as it comes up. -- Ann McLaughlin, Parent Council Secretary

Fort River Elementary School students pose with examples of their "portrait and self-portrait" project on display in the hallway of their school in Amherst. They are from left, Hamza S. Awaisi, 12, Matthew J. Cullen, 11, Nina D.E. Maroudas, 11, and Lilly Oh, 12, all of Amherst.

By DIANE LEDERMAN dlederman@repub.com

AMHERST - In her self-portrait, 11-year-old Nina D.E. Maroudas sits surrounded by white calla lilies just as the unknown peasant woman did in Diego Rivera's "El Venedor de Alcatraces."

Hamza S. Awaisi, 12, is sitting in a chair posing as Pere Tanguy, the painting called "Portrait of Pere Tanguy" by Vincent Van Gogh.

These are just two of the 82 self-portraits on display at the Fort River Elementary School, acrylic paintings by the sixth-grade students in Teri P. Magner's art classes. The exhibit will be on display until mid-January.

During the summer, Magner was given a private tour of artist Kehinde Wiley's art work on display at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., by a former Fort River student Brooke M. Steinhauser, who was an intern then.

Wiley had juxtaposed contemporary portraits of black hip-hop artists in the style of historical paintings. For example, he depicted rapper Ice T as Napoleon on his throne. Seeing his work, Magner knew that her art students would be inspired.

So earlier this year, she cut out more than 200 portraits and self-portraits painted by a range of artists and allowed her students to choose one that they liked to use for their own portrait.

First they drew the portrait on the canvas. Then they went to work painting.

They had to learn to mix colors to replicate those in the paintings they were copying and also learned to paint from the furthest point in the back to create a three-dimensional painting.

Surrounded by the art work, Magner said, "I'm blown away by this." The paintings far exceeded her expectations. "These students are brilliant," she said. "This was a lot to ask of them."

Maroudas said she had seen some of Rivera's paintings and liked them and liked the image of the woman amid the calla lilies. "It was hard. It was kind of easy (too.) ... You kind of make it your own. It was fun to get your picture in the place of this person."

Students painted everything but their faces and instead a photograph was inserted into the painting. That was to ease any intimidation the students might have felt, Magner said.

"Ms. Magner did a good job of teaching us," Maroudas said.

Lilly Oh, 12, was drawn to a Claude Monet painting depicting a woman in a long white dress peering out to sea. "I really like Monet's style. I really liked her dress," she said of what drew her to the work.

She liked the clouds which were hard to capture and the sky. "I love art," she said.

Magner said she pushed her students hard. "When creating, the process is not easy," she said.

Matthew J. Cullen, 11, liked the splattery color's of the Degas painting he worked form He said the skin tone of the man's hands in the painting was hard to match. But he loved to "see it just developing." He said the project was a lot of fun.

Music Room: Help Wanted!

Hello Fort River parents and guardians, There are a lot of exciting activities going on in the music room. We are incorporating drama into our music classes, and the students are very excited. It would be great to have some parent (or grandparent) volunteers to help and support the following projects: Chorus - We need parent volunteers to help transport musical instruments and props from Fort River to the Middle School auditorium on the night of our winter concert, Thursday, January 8th. This would involve picking up the instruments during or after school that day, and then delivering them to the middle school that evening by 5:30 pm. Then those parents would need to return the music equipment back to the school on the following day. It would also be wonderful to have some parent volunteers who could carpool students who need a ride to and from the concert that night. Kabuki Play- I am integrating with Linda Yeh and her fourth grade on a play based on a Japanese folk tale. We have been studying the Kabuki theater tradition, and are doing this play using elements of Kabuki. Miss Yeh’s will present this play on Wednesday morning, January 21st. The students will be working in music class on the following dates from 10:45 to 11:25- Monday 12/15, Tuesday 12/16, Monday 1/5, Tuesday 1/6, Tuesday 1/20. It would be great if a parent could come and assist at rehearsals, helping to cue the children, and helping with makeup and costumes. Also, if there are Japanese parents at Fort River who would like to come and consult with our class about Japanese culture and Kabuki, that would be wonderful. Mummer’s Play-Kris Griswold’s third grade class is working on a mummer’s play as part of their Medieval history unit. They will be rehearsing this play in music class on Thursday afternoons from 12:30 to 1:20. They will perform this play at their Medieval Studies celebration on Friday, January 23rd. It would be wonderful to have another adult come to help us with our rehearsals and performance, and also to help with children getting into their costumes. Fifth Grade Irish Immigration Plays-Starting in January, all of the fifth grade classes will be working on a musical theater project in which they act out stories of people who left Ireland in the mid 1800’s to escape the potato famine. It would be great to have additional people work with small groups as they develop their scenes for performance. We will present our plays in March or April. If you are interested in helping in any of these events, please contact me via email at whitea@arps.org or in writing to my school mail box. Or you can call and leave a message. My school phone number is 362-1264. Thank you, Anne White Fort River Music Teacher

6th Grade Art Opening

You Are Cordially Invited To the Fort River School 6th Grade “Art Opening” Of Portrait & Self-Portrait Paintings Drop in and view the work on Tuesday, December 9th anytime from 3:30-6:30 pm.
6th grade art students at Fort River Elementary School recently created portraits of themselves based on artist Kehinde Wiley's integration of young African-American hip-hop artists into traditional portraits. Fort River Art Teacher Teri Magner was in Washington, DC over the summer where she received a private showing of Wiley's exhibit at the National Portrait Gallery from her former Fort River student Brooke Steinhauser, then a Smithsonian gallery intern. When Magner saw it, she knew it was something her students would both invest in and relate to. Wiley, a New York based artist, is known for his paintings of contemporary urban African-American men in poses taken from famous historical paintings. He chooses paintings for his subjects that best represent the per formative and personal aspects of their character. In a well known piece, he portrayed Ice T through Napoleon's portrait on the throne for the VH1 Hip Hop Honors. Inspired, Mrs. Magner found 200 portraits from traditional to contemporary, ensuring each of her 82 sixth grade students would find one that was a good fit. The students used themselves in the portraits instead of a contemporary artist, painting on canvas with acrylic. In order to minimize the intimidation of painting one's face and instead keep the focus on recreating the background, they printed photos of themselves from the computer and glued them onto the canvas. The resulting piece reflects each student’s canvas painting with their face integrated, framed with a copy of the original portrait they chose. Drop by, enjoy the art, have a snack, and speak with some of the artists!
